Sylheti Weddings, Festivals & Events

Many diaspora families plan a wedding or celebration in Sylhet. Here is what each occasion involves and how to plan from abroad.

Stages of a Sylheti wedding

  • Paan-chini / engagement — the families formally agree the match.
  • Mehndi and gaye holud — turmeric and henna evenings with music, food and family.
  • Biye / nikah — the religious ceremony and main reception.
  • Walima or bou-bhat — the reception hosted by the groom's family afterwards.

Planning a wedding in Sylhet from abroad

  • Book community centres and halls early for the winter season (December–February), the most popular time.
  • Ask a trusted relative to visit venues and caterers in person; ask for written quotes.
  • Check marriage registration (kazi) requirements, and register the marriage properly if a UK spouse visa will follow.
  • Send money through a regulated provider — compare costs on our money transfer page.

Festivals through the year

  • Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha — dates follow the moon, so they move about 11 days earlier each year.
  • Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) — 14 April in Bangladesh, with melas in Sylhet and in Banglatown, London.
  • Urs of Hazrat Shah Jalal — annual gathering at the dargah in Sylhet.
  • 21 February — International Mother Language Day, marked at Shaheed Minars in Sylhet and Altab Ali Park, London.
  • 16 December — Victory Day.
