Where a publisher's feed carries a picture, it is shown with the publisher's name and a link to the story. When a feed carries none, a painted Sylhet, London or New York picture stands in and the card is marked "Illustration".

One city, many time zones

Sylhetis abroad

Sylhet's story does not stop at its borders. Families from the region — and from neighbouring Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sunamganj — have settled across the world, and their news travels back home just as quickly.

United Kingdom

The largest Sylheti community outside Bangladesh is in Britain, concentrated in London's East End — Tower Hamlets in particular — with long-standing communities in Birmingham and Manchester. London's Bangla press, community associations and Sylheti cultural organisations cover weddings, conferences, local politics and campaigns that matter back home.

United States

New York City's Bangladeshi neighbourhoods, especially around Jackson Heights in Queens and Jamaica in Queens, anchor a fast-growing Sylheti community, with further clusters in New Jersey, Michigan and Florida. Community papers there report on elections, small businesses, immigration and student life.

Elsewhere

Sylhetis also live across the Gulf states, Malaysia and Singapore, in India's north-east, and in Canada and Australia. Remittances from these communities are a major part of Sylhet's economy, so a change of job, flight or policy abroad is news in Sylhet too.

Where these stories come from

How the news box works

Published sources, not rewrites

Headlines are gathered from Google News and Bing News feeds, which index thousands of publishers in Bangladesh, the UK, the United States and elsewhere. Sylhet.Online does not rewrite these stories — each card links to the publisher's own page, where the full article, its byline and its corrections policy live.

Only stories about us

A headline only appears here if it mentions Sylhet or the Sylheti community, or a place in the region such as Jaflong, Ratargul, Lawachara, Sreemangal or Zindabazar. The UK and US sections also include stories about their wider Bangladeshi communities.

Pictures come from the publisher

When a feed carries a picture with the story, that picture is shown and credited to the publisher. When it does not, a painted picture of Sylhet, London or New York is used and the card is marked "Illustration", so nothing is presented as a photograph of the event.

Accuracy stays with the publisher

Sylhet.Online does not fact-check third-party reporting. If a story is wrong or missing, the fastest route is the publisher's own contact page; tell us on the contact page as well and we can stop linking to it.

Sylhet news — common questions

How often is the news updated?

Each section is collected automatically every hour, even when nobody is visiting. The last collection time appears above the headlines. If sources are unavailable, the previous stories stay visible until a successful update.

Can I read the news without an account?

Yes. Reading news, hotels, shopping, the business directory and the travel guide needs no sign-up. An account is only for posting in MySylhet or listing an advert.

Can I send Sylhet.Online a story?

Please do. Use the contact page with what happened, where and when, and any photographs you took yourself. Community members can also post directly in MySylhet.

Why do some cards say "Illustration"?

That publisher's feed did not include a picture, so a painted scene stands in. The painted picture is not a photograph of the story and is labelled as such.
