Sylhet’s shrines: a respectful visitor’s guide

Sylhet’s spiritual heritage is part of everyday life, not simply a collection of sights. A thoughtful visit to its shrines begins by recognising that the people around you may be there to pray, remember someone or make a pilgrimage.

Two names you will hear often

The shrine of Shah Jalal is an important pilgrimage site in Sylhet city. Bangladesh Tourism Board also lists the shrine of Shah Paran among the region’s religious landmarks.

These places help explain why Sylhet holds such significance for many families in Bangladesh and overseas. You do not need to share the same faith to approach a visit with patience, curiosity and respect.

Dress and behaviour

Dress modestly and follow posted instructions or guidance from staff. Remove shoes where required and keep noise low, especially near prayer areas. Access arrangements may differ between spaces and can change.

If you are unsure where you may go, ask before entering. Do not assume that every area is open to sightseeing visitors. Give worshippers room, avoid blocking entrances and do not interrupt someone who is praying.

Photography is a question, not a right

Ask before photographing people, particularly during worship. Follow any restrictions on photography inside the site and accept a refusal graciously.

A respectful memory does not have to include a close-up portrait or a photograph of every room. Notice the setting and the rhythm of the place while keeping your phone away when it would intrude.

Make it part of a gentle city day

A shrine visit can fit into a quieter day in Sylhet, with time for a meal or a look at the Surma river from a safe public viewpoint. Keep different stops flexible rather than setting a rigid timetable.

If visiting with children, explain beforehand that these are active religious places. Confirm transport and current access locally; this guide does not state prayer schedules, admission arrangements or opening times.
