For many travellers, a meal is the quickest way to connect with a place. In Sylhet, start with curiosity rather than a long checklist: ask what is cooking, discover the distinctive flavour of shatkora and leave room for tea.

Shatkora is a local citrus known for its distinctive tangy, aromatic contribution to curries. Beef shatkora is identified in regional food reporting as a traditional Sylheti dish.
The flavour can be unfamiliar if you expect ordinary lemon. Ask how the dish is prepared and what meat or other ingredients it contains. Not every restaurant serves it every day, so check availability rather than arriving with a fixed order.
Rice with fish curry and bhorta offers another way into Bengali and Sylheti cooking. Bhorta refers to mashed preparations that may include vegetables, fish or other ingredients; seasonings and chilli levels vary.
A dish that looks vegetarian may contain fish, and mustard oil or other ingredients may matter to your dietary needs. Ask clear questions about allergies and ingredients rather than relying only on the name or appearance.
The wider Sylhet division is associated with tea-growing, particularly around Sreemangal. A simple cup of tea is part of the experience; layered tea is another well-known stop for visitors in that area.
Do not confuse Sreemangal with Sylhet city when planning a food outing. A tea-country visit needs its own travel time. Vendors, presentation and availability vary, so avoid building a whole day around one photograph of a cup.
Our Eat page lists Panshi, Pach Bhai and Woondaal King Kebab with sourced addresses. Use those listings as a starting point, then check current menus and opening times directly or through the business’s map listing.
Choose freshly cooked food and safe drinking water. Ask about spice levels if travelling with children or if you prefer milder dishes. Trying one unfamiliar dish alongside something familiar can make a first meal more enjoyable than ordering everything at once.
